Great question! There’s a few things to consider. My first instinct is that it was against the rules (sorry!) just because you have no way of truly knowing if she has 4 of a kind or not. You made a very good guess, but in that situation it’s possible she could have switched numbers without you knowing, or even just made a mistake. Now did you reach for the spoon solely because you knew she had four of a kind? Or were you just extra on your guard to her every movement because you had a good guess she had four of a kind? If you reached for the spoon because you saw her move for it, I would say it’s legal. But if you reached for the spoon without her even trying to grab it, I would say it’s not.

Of course, you could also make an argument for it being a completely legal move, since the spoon was grabbed after one player had four of a kind. But had you been incorrect in your guess, and grabbed the spoon before she actually had four of a kind, you would have lost.

Personally, I think I’d go with the first interpretation, but that’s just me! Sorry that’s not super definitive, but rules for games like this are often a matter of opinion, and I just collect the games; I don’t pretend to be the authority on all the rules 🙂

Thanks for asking!

I was the dealer…I noticed she swapped cards once and then twice, I knew the last time she did it that she must have 4 of a kind so I reached for the spoon right as she was and beat her to it. Was that against the rules for me to do?

My teens absolutely loved it. They couldn’t wait to play it when they had free time. Thank you for reminding me how much fun it is. I will introduce it to my family….You know if teens like it, it’s a really good game…………thank you……….Lyn

Wow, Kevin, that sounds AWESOME! I’ll definitely have to try that variation. Thanks for sharing and explaining how to play! Can I add this variation to the main post and mention your name?

We don’t spell ‘SPOON’, we spell ‘PIG’. Once someone is PIG, they are not yet out of the game. They are on a ‘free ride’. One more loss, and then they are out of the game. BUT, when someone is PIG, players are not allowed to talk to them. You can talk ABOUT them, but if you are caught talking TO the PIG, you are instantly PIG yourself and no one can talk to you. Say Jim is PIG. He’s got nothing to lose, so he tries to trick others into talking to him by asking innocent questions. “How many cards do you have?” “Three” says Patty. Now she is PIG too AND, if Ruth says, “Oh, Patty- you’re PIG!” then of course Ruth is now PIG, because she talked TO Patty. Ruth should say to Bill, “Oh Bill, Now Patty is PIG!” It gets pretty confusing, so you need to have your wits about you…
